The education system of today is all changed up. The traditional years-long approach of giving marks on the basis of what's written in the exam is gone.

And, today’s system evaluates students on a range of metrics. These are personality, class participation, performance in written, and oral exams, class internals, participation in experimental learning, and whatnot!

All this also transformed the marking system, and now, the marks, and final performance is often calculated in CGPA! Even the best CBSE schools also follow this system!

What is the Full Form of CGPA?

CGPA is a Cumulative Grade Points Average. This is the metric scale on which the overall performance of a student is evaluated. It is also used for admissions to successor classes, as well as in entrance exams under the merit scheme.

But, what is CGPA? And how has it become so prevalent in today’s education system? Moreover, how can one calculate numbers from CGPA, or how to convert marks into CGPA, or vice versa? We will also mention the CGPA calculator formula that will help you calculate your percentage, or marks right from your CGPA score. You will get all the answers here! So, let's dive in!

What is CGPA?

CGPA or Cumulative Grade Points Average is an average of grade points acquired by students in five subjects. This generally doesn’t include the sixth additional subject. Further, it is the average of “Grade Points, and not marks obtained in exams.

It is written on the report card of students as well. And, then students need to calculate marks or percentages of their performance from obtained CGPA.

Got questions? Don’t worry, we’ll deal with all your concerns on how to calculate CGPA by the end of this article. So, stay put! First, let’s start with how you can convert CGPA to marks, and marks to CGPA!

How to Calculate CGPA from Marks?

To convert CGPA into marks, you need to jot down marks obtained by you in all five subjects. For instance, consider an example that you got the following marks in your five subjects-

Subject

Marks Obtained (from 100)

S1

78

S2

83

S3

94

S4

65

S5

88

Total

408/500

Now, how to proceed? What is the standard way to proceed for marks to the CGPA converter? As we mentioned in the beginning, CGPA is the average of “Grade Points”. And so far, we’ve listed “Marks” in the table. Not grade points! That is the next step; to convert your marks into grade points! To convert marks to grade points, we need to follow a standard table.

Marks Range

91-100

Now, go back to our example, and deduce the grade point from Marks!

408/500

43/50

This is the total grade point; .i.e 43/50. Now, let's move to the actual CGPA calculator to convert this total grade point into marks.

CGPA Formula

There is a basic CGPA formula that makes it easy to calculate CGPA from marks.

CGPA= Total Grade Point Obtained/No. of Subjects

To know your CGPA from marks, all you need to do is to put values in this formula, and you will get your CGPA. For instance, let's get back to our example-

The total grade point obtained is 43, and the number of subjects is 5. Let’s deduce the CGPA- CGPA= 43/5 = 8.6 CGPA

This is how you can calculate your CGPA from Marks. But, things don't end up here. There often is the requirement to convert CGPA to a percentage. Let’s start!

How to Calculate CGPA to a Percentage?

The CGPA to percentage calculator works quite differently from the CGPA to mark calculator. To get a percentage score from CGPA, there is no need to convert each subject’s marks into grade points first. As we will be deducting the final percentage from the total grade point.

CGPA Formula

The CGPA to percentage converter formula goes like this:-

Percentage Score= Total Grade Point of Five Subjects X 9.5

Now, let's apply the values from our sample to this formula. The total grade point of 5 subjects obtained was 8.6. So, let's proceed-

Percentage Score= 8.6 X 9.5 = 81.7%

This is your answer to how to calculate the percentage from CGPA! But, if you will see your report card, it will also have the final grade according to your CGPA, and the percentage obtained.

Let's move on to how you can calculate your grade point from your CGPA. For this, we need to follow a standard grade table!

So, let’s suppose you’ve got a final CGPA of 8. Then, according to the grade table, you will get a B1 grade overall!

This is how the whole CGPA system has changed the marking, evaluation, and merit system. But, is this system good? Or is it propounding some repercussions for students? Let’s discuss!

Advantages and Disadvantages of CGPA

Every system has its pros and cons. And, the CGPA system is no different. There are enough debates to list the merits, and demerits of this new marking system. Let’s discuss a few here!

Advantages of CGPA

This system provides a lot of advantages for students and learners. Some of these are:

1. As the CGPA system doesn’t tend to mention the marks obtained on report cards, students feel less pressured or stressed about “numbers'' in exams. This makes them more focused on learning, rather than just chasing marks!

2. CGPA evaluates students on a range of parameters along with performance in the final exam. This makes learning fun, and wholesome.

3. CGPA makes it easier for teachers to also assess students, and classify them into groups. These groups can be on the basis of attention students need. For instance, teachers can group 10-8 CGPA students in one group, and 7-5 in another.

And, the remaining students with CGPA lower than 5 in one group. This can help teachers organize activities, assign assignments, and whatnot!

Disadvantages of CGPA

While providing a lot of advantages, this also has repercussions. Here are a few-

1. As the CGPA system groups students with 91-100 in one group, it becomes demotivating for some. For Instance, think of a situation when you’ve got 99, and another student has 92. But, in the toppers list, you both have been named. This sometimes becomes demotivating for students acquiring significantly higher marks!

2. As this system evaluates grades and provides grades on a 10-mark margin. This is not the right evaluation of a student's performance.

3. It is also believed that CGPA tends to mitigate the learners’ hunger for learning. This is because the system gives them a feeling that even when they would study, and learn less, they can acquire reasonable grades on the grade point table. This is extremely concerning.
